Pacific Northwest Gallery

Pictures from around Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.

When I moved from Phoenix to Portland, I drove through Crater Lake National Park on June 16. There were snow banks on either side of the road up to twenty feet high at times.

Crater Lake

Wizard Island continues to grow in the lake as a result of volcanic activity.

Crater Lake National Park

The road around the lake follows the top of the rim. The cliffs are up to 2,000 feet high and the lake is the deepest in the U.S. - over 1,900 feet deep.

The Rim Drive

As you can tell, I was totally unprepared for the temperature to hover around 40 degrees in the middle of June. The road around the eastern side of the rim was still closed due to snow, and the western rim road that I drove around had just opened for the year.

Downtown Seattle

Mount Rainier is about 50 miles from Seattle and, on a clear day, can be seen from Portland.

Q: Are We Not Men?

On the I-5 from Seattle, approaching the Canadian border. You can see the grief and annoyance written on my face from having to wait in this line for an hour.

Crossing the Border

Entering Canada, we saw this Canadian flag composed of flowers.

Granville Island

I thought to myself, just how goofy was the goofiest face ever made in Stanley Park? Could it be bested?

Eagle Creek Trail

I am on top of a cliff overlooking the canyon created by Eagle Creek. Later, I swam up to the fallen tree in the center of the photo when we hiked down into the canyon.

Cliff Jumping

We had to swim the last 100 yards to get to the actual punch bowl. The falls were deceptively tall and the glacial creek was deceptively cold, about 40 feet and 50 degrees, respectively.

Punch Bowl Falls

For perspective, the enormous fallen tree is about 100 yards away from here and the falls are about 40 feet tall. The cliff jumper leapt off the high point of the cliff, above and to the left of the falls.

Punch Bowl Falls

After hiking back out from Eagle Creek, we went to Multnomah Falls, located about 30 minutes east of Portland

Multnomah Falls

This is more or less the bottom third of the 620 foot falls. The footbridge was built in 1914 and stands more than a hundred feet above the lower cascade.
