A camping trip through the Canadian Rockies in Alberta. Along the way we visited Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Edmonton and Calgary.

I am standing on the shores of the world-famous resort lake, about an hour northwest of the town of Banff. The clouds are descending, and it would start raining heavily and snowing a little within 20 minutes.

Lake Louise

This impenetrable mountain is in Banff National Park, halfway between Banff and Lake Louise

Canadian Geese

On the drive from Johnson Lake back to our campground at Tunnel Mountain, we passed this herd of elk. We got out of the car and were able to approach quite close before the elk walked away.

Bow River Valley

Here is the lake again on day two when it was a little sunnier. The water is an amazing shade of turquoise and the spectacular cliffs just rise straight out of the lake.

Lake Louise

Moraine Lake and several of the Ten Peaks, south of Lake Louise in Banff National Park. The amazing blue water in all of these lakes is caused by glaciers grinding down the mountains. The resulting rock dust is suspended in the water and absorbs all visible light, except turquoise.

Valley of the Ten Peaks

Not much remains of the glacier that helped form Moraine Lake, but this section is visible among the Ten Peaks.

Moraine Lake Glacier

Located along the Icefields Parkway in Banff, this is the highest road pass in the four mountain parks, about 7000 feet about sea level.

Bow Summit

A short uphill walk from Bow Summit leads to this view of glacially fed and brilliantly turquoise Peyto Lake. On the right is a great view of the Canadian Rockies in the northern half of Banff National Park.

Mistaya Canyon

The Columbia Icefield is beyond these mountains in Jasper National Park, just across the border from Banff. The icefield is the largest south of Alaska and sits atop a triple continental divide - its runoff flows to the Arctic, Atlantic, and Pacific oceans.

Jasper National Park

One of the enormous glaciers coming off the Columbia Icefield. The icefield itself is larger than the city of Vancouver.

Athabasca Glacier

The mountains around the Columbia Icefield were covered in snow in August

Snowy Peaks

We hiked up onto Athabasca Glacier and saw this stream running down its face. The deep sheet of ice creates a brilliant blue color.

Glacial Runoff

This 75 foot waterfall along the Athabasca River has the most powerful flow to be found anywhere in the four mountain parks. It is just southeast of the town of Jasper, Alberta

Athabasca Falls
