Ireland Gallery

Took a ferry from Stranraer, Scotland to Belfast, Northern Ireland and a bus to Dublin, Ireland and then spent a few days in Dublin and the surrounding countryside.

The Custom House was completed in 1791 and is situated on the River Liffey in central Dublin. Its dome was destroyed by the IRA in 1921 during the Irish Civil War and restored since.

Dublin Custom House

The cathedral has been here since about 1030. It has been the seat of the Archbishop of Dublin ever since medieval times.

Christ Church Cathedral

The cultural heart of Dublin packed with people.

Temple Bar

Located in the National Museum. I also went to Trinity College and saw the Book of Kells but no photos were allowed.

Celtic Cross

The exit sign in the Ancient Egypt section of the National Museum of Ireland.

Here are some people from the Hostel in Dublin who I went around with to see the sights. We're in a courtyard in Trinity College.

St. Stephen's Green

Here I am leaping in Saint Stephen's Green

I took a bus tour from Dublin south toward the Wicklow Mountains. This is looking out the bus window toward the Irish Sea.

Dublin Bay

A suburb of Dublin and important harbor with ferries to Wales. Bono, The Edge, and Enya live in the hills near where I took this picture.

The Irish Coast

South of Dublin is the Powersbooth Estate and Gardens, supposedly one of the finest of its type in Europe. The Wicklow Mountains are in the distance.

Powersbooth Gardens

I climbed this tower for a nice view of the surrounding gardens.

Here are some of the flowers in the Japanese Garden section.

Japanese Gardens

A stream ran through this grotto, filled the bowl, and spilled over into a pond below.

Grotto Fountain

The family home is in the back left behind the fountain and lake.

Powersbooth Estate

Here's a decent view of the mountains in the distance. The gardens really spread out before you here... they are really big. It took me about 90 minutes to briskly walk the trail through them.

Wicklow Mountains

Ireland's most famous export is brewed here in central Dublin. I didn't take a tour of the storehouse because of the infinite line (queue) to get in.

Guiness Brewery

This is the reputed site where St. Patrick first began baptizing the Irish in the 5th century. Then he drove all the snakes out of Ireland.

St. Patrick's Cathedral

He was the dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral for many years and gets a nice plot of land in the middle of it.

Jonathan Swift's Tomb

I know this album is titled Ireland, but, like the IRA, I'm dealing with it as the geographical rather than political entity. So I included a couple pictures of Northern Ireland. This mural greeted me as I wandered out of the central Belfast bus station.

Belfast
